CCTV in taxis, buses and coaches.

A CCTV system in a taxi generally consists of 1 or 2 cameras with LEDs for night vision; there is also a ruggedized digital video recorder with a hard drive to record the footage and a monitor for the driver to view the images. An audio option is also available.

A CCTV system in a bus or coach generally consists of 4 to 8 cameras with LEDs for night vision; there is also a ruggedized digital video recorder with a hard drive to record the footage and a monitor for the driver to view the images. An audio option is also available.

Systems are installed for the purpose of improving driver and passenger safety and to assist the police in any possible investigations.

CCTV Systems

Equipment to be fitted into vehicles should be checked to ensure an ‘e’ or ‘CE’ marking is displayed. Systems without this mark must not be fitted as they could interfere with other electrical safety devices and systems fitted in the vehicles such as the anti-lock braking system.

Installation of CCTV Systems

CCTV systems must be installed in such a way that they do not present any danger to passengers and the driver.

Equipment must not obscure the driver’s vision or be fitted so that it would prevent safety features like air bags operating correctly. All fixings should be permanent. Suction devices must not be used as these can detach in the event of an accident. All wiring must be permanent and compliant with the vehicle manufacturer’s and CCTV system’s technical specifications.

All vehicles fitted with CCTV must display standard signage that is visible to passengers informing them that a system is fitted.

Relevant Legislation

Vehicle owners who have had a CCTV system installed in their vehicle/s must comply with the data protection principles set out in the Data Protection Act 1998 and will have legal responsibility under this act for the installation and operation of this equipment and the capture, encryption, storage and use of images.

Any vehicle owner, who may be a company, organisation or individual, who has a CCTV system installed into a licensed vehicle must register with the Information Commissioner’s Office.

For several years now, taxis, bus and coach fleets have recognised the benefits of equipping their vehicles with on-board CCTV solutions.

Systems can often reduce vandalism, create a safer environment for both passengers and drivers, improve revenue collection through ticket machines, dramatically reduce insurance premiums and payouts and reduce fuel consumption (in conjunction with driver training).

M.A.C. Security Solutions  mobile CCTV solutions for taxis, coaches and buses offer a customised system with either a 4, 8 or 16 channel recorder with the relevant hard drive for up to 30 day recording, and the option of an automatic download feature when the taxi, bus or coach returns to the depot.
